Asus R50 UMPC release gets firm, like coagulating jello

We haven’t heard much about ASUS’ R50/R50a UMPC since its debut at CES in January. Oh sure, it was on display at CeBIT but only to be overshadowed (literally) by its imposing 7-inch, R70 bro. With Intel properly official with Atom, Asus now tells us to expect the 5.6-inch R50 to rollout before June in both Linux and Vista flavors with a price above $500. Really, Asus, “above” $500, so is that $501, $1,000 or $1,500? A little bit more specificity please when you announce the expected November availability of the next R50 with keyboard, ok?

SNES modded into handheld by Ben Heck forum member

Sure, you’ve seen the portable wooden SNES, but if you’ve been looking for something with more of that fresh-off-the-showroom-floor sheen, maybe you should check into this Ben Heck-forum user’s design. Using a modified Polycase, dual lithium-ion batteries, a 5-inch Zenith LCD, and a whole bunch of Super Nintendo, the modder created what could easily be mistaken for a bona-fide production model. Sure, the back looks a tad bit messy, but “Life of Brian” (the SNES fan in question) has managed to squeeze in a second controller port and A/V outs — no small feat. Check the video after the break to see the handheld in action… a lot of action… like, the guy plays StarFox for a long time.

Intel’s Centrino Atom chips are officially official

Intel officially took the wraps off its widely-discussed and readily-implemented Centrino Atom processor / system controller for MIDs last night, and while there aren’t a lot of surprises in spec land, it was nice to finally get an idea of what these suckers will cost:

  • Z500 – 800MHz, 0.65W TDP power, 400MHz FSB, 512K L2 cache ($45)
  • Z510 – 1.1GHz, 2W TDP power, 400MHz FSB, 512K L2 cache ($45)
  • Z520 – 1.33GHz, 2W TDP power, 533MHz FSB, 512K L2 cache ($65)
  • Z530 – 1.6GHz, 2W TDP power, 533MHz FSB, 512K L2 cache ($95)
  • Z540 – 1.86GHz, 2.4W TDP power, 533MHz FSB, 512K L2 cache ($160)

That’s the pricing per 1,000 units, and is a little bit more than that $30 1.6GHz Atom 230 we were hearing about, but it does include the CPU plus the System Controller Hub with integrated graphics, HD video playback, HD audio and other nifty I/O things like support for WiFi, WiMAX and cellular radios.

HAVA player hits Nokia’s internet tablets

Monsoon’s HAVA HD streamer doesn’t get quite as much love as the various Slingboxes, but it’s a fine piece of kit with features Sling doesn’t have quite yet, like pause and rewind — and now it’s got one more supported client platform, as the company’s using CTIA to roll out support for Nokia’s Internet Tablet OS. That means the N800 and N810 can now get in on the action, and the quality looks pretty decent — the crew over at Internet Tablet Talk got a chance to play with an early version, and they think it looks even better than the PC client. Hmm, looks like that WiMAX N810 could double as a fairly decent portable TV, eh? Video after the break.

[Thanks, Joey]

Intel briefly demonstrates clamshell MID on video

Filed under:

Whoa boy, what have we here? A dramatically short video over at jkkmobile shows off a mysterious new Intel MID, which we presume was captured in Shanghai at the Intel Developer Forum. Unfortunately, there’s absolutely zero information on this piece outside of what you see in video posted after the jump, but the sleek clamshell design already has our attention. Judging by the Day Zero news bullets over on Intel’s site, we know the firm’s aiming to unveil “smaller form factors with improved power efficiency,” and judging by the looks of this one, it certainly fits the bill. We’ll keep you posted if more details emerge.

Nokia WiMAX N810 appears in the wild

Filed under:

The WiMAX version of Nokia’s N810 internet tablet has already popped up on Nokia’s European site, lending creedence to all those whispers about a CTIA debut tomorrow, and now we’ve got units showing up in the wild, which is probably a good sign. There were apparently some other shots of this bad boy on Flickr, but they’ve since been removed — let’s hope tomorrow brings us some official beauty shots, eh?
