This CES: all about the HDTVs. On this CES 2008 episode of the podcast we're talking TV with Engadget HD editor Ben Drawbaugh -- as well as a bit about Lenovo's grand new consumer computing brand plan. We also caught up with our pal Charles over at Virgin America, who talked with us a bit about the airlines nascent plans to get you online during your next flight.

Get the podcast
[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes (enhanced AAC).
[RSS MP3] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in MP3) to your RSS aggregator and have the show delivered automatically.
[RSS AAC] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in enhanced AAC) to your RSS aggregator.
[RSS OGG] Add the Engadget Podcast feed (in OGG) to your RSS aggregator.

Hosts: Peter Rojas and Ryan Block
Guests: Ben Drawbaugh (Engadget HD), Charles Ogilvie (Virgin America)
Producer: Trent Wolbe
Music: Solvent - Instructograph (Ghostly International)

05:04 - Mitsubishi laser TV unveiled
13:35 - Sony XEL-1 OLED slips into US stores
19:51 - OpenCable officially becomes tru2way
31:20 - Lenovo launches IdeaPad, IdeaStation laptop and desktop lines
39:24 - AirCell set to hook up Virgin America with in-flight broadband

LISTEN (MP3)
LISTEN (AAC)
LISTEN (OGG)

Contact the podcast: 1-888-ENGADGET, Engadget (Gizmo Project) or podcast at engadget dawt com

Permalink | Email this | Comments

We've wanted a long time to get our old pal Major Nelson on the Engadget podcast, and what better occasion than CES? Ok, maybe E3 -- but there's been no dearth of 360 news at and prior to the show, and no shortage of questions we've been dying to have answered on the air. If you're not down with the Xbox, you'll probably want to wait for a little bit until our next podcast, because in this one we're talking about the recent Live outages, how the console's been doing in the market, the persistence of the integrated HD DVD player rumor, the announcement of the 360's first IPTV rollout, and even waxing nerd about our favorite titles of late.

It wouldn't be CES without the Engadget Podcast, right? That's why we're back today with the first in a series of special CES edition podcasts with hosts Ryan Block and Peter Rojas. In today's installment we go over a bunch of the biggest announcements of the past few days, including Warner's HD DVD bombshell; the news that Sony is adding Skype to the PSP, introducing a new mylo, and bringing the Rolly to the States; Alienware's curved ultrawidescreen panoramic gaming display; and Apple's attempt to steal some of that CES thunder with the announcements of a new Mac Pro and Xserve.

Engadget podcast fans, good news! I'll be bringing back the podcast for the duration of CES, with our editorial team and a special guest or two sitting in on the show to discuss the big news in Vegas. So fire up your podcast aggregator / iTunes / Zune Marketplace, or keep an eye on the Engadget podcast feed, because the show will be back on the air for next week and next week only!

And on the video front, we're teaming up with CNET-expat and Engadget ladyfriend Veronica Belmont and her excellent team at Mahalo Daily, who will help round out Engadget's up to the minute video coverage. We're expecting great things, so be sure to check back for Engadget + Mahalo Daily (and all the rest of our video) out at the Engadget video tag.

-Ryan

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

While it's not quite on the level of some of the steampunk gear we've seen, devientART member porkshanks' so-called "Ambience Enhancer" is at least considerably more practical than some of those previous contraptions, and it recycles some gear that would otherwise have been discarded, or has already been discarded. That bit of kit is an MP3 player that was apparently found on the ground near a bus station, which got spiffed up with some brass and leather and then got paired with a set of vintage Cannonball Empires headphones, whose innards were replaced with those from a set of some decidedly more recent Sony MDR-006 phones. The whole thing was then, naturally, made wearable with a handy wrist strap.

[Via Gadget Lab]

Podcast fans,

I have some bummer news and some not-so-bummer news for you. I'll cut to the chase (warning: it gets a little personal): after more than a hundred shows and almost three years of podcasting Peter and I have decided to put the show on hiatus. Yeah, I know, it's seriously depressing to us too, but since the death of Pete's dad we just haven't been able to get the show back on track. So instead of dragging it out any further and keeping you all wondering, we figured it's best to be realistic about things.

The no-so-bummer news is the Engadget HD podcast lives on, with Ben and his new co-host Steve running the show with our pal Trent producing. So yeah, it wouldn't be infeasible for Pete or myself to guest over there every now and again. And hey, the Engadget Podcast is only on hiatus, there's no reason it might not return later, or during events like CES.

To everyone who's stuck by the show thus far, your loyalty and listenership means a LOT to us. It's hard to express just how much we've appreciated the constant flow of support and input you guys have given us. Doing the podcast has always been one of the highlights of our week, and we're looking forward to kickstarting the show again at some point down the road. Until then, you know where to find us!

Your pals,
Ryan and Pete

P.S. -It just didn't seem right to post this without an audio note to the same effect!

LISTEN (MP3)
LISTEN (AAC)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Update: By popular request, you can still download the Engadget Podcast back catalogue. Just enter in the following URL, they've all got the same file format: http://www.engadget.com/podcasts/Engadget_Podcast_NNN.mp3 (i.e. http://www.engadget.com/podcasts/Engadget_Podcast_001.mp3). We're working on updating all the old back links on our show notes, which go all the way back to 2004.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

You know, sometimes you want a preamp, but not too much preamp. Well, CEntrance has got you all-kinds of covered on that tip with its new, self-contained, microphone-attaching, USB-based MicPort Pro. The premise of the device is simple: it turns any single microphone or instrument into a self-powered, single channel, 24-bit / 96KHz audio interface -- all you have to do is hook it up to your computer with the supplied USB cable. The MicPort also features a headphone out, if you want to create the wackiest closed-loop situation ever, though it looks like the company is intending this for podcasters and the like, given that it allows any and all XLR-based mics to be plugged directly into your USB port. Shipping now (or so the company says) for $149.95.

[Via Harmony Central]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Office Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
