We suppose we're pretty easy to please: pack some NES emulation and some decent slide-out controls into a passable PMP form factor and we're sold. Add in a 3-inch LCD, TV-out and a superfluous 1.3 megapixel camera... what more could we ever ask for?

[Via PMP Today]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If you're thinking one made of imitation meat -- you're dead right! Apparently, a company in Japan is under the impression that you want to wrap your music player in a grade A lookalike, undoubtedly to the thrill of your vegetarian friends and family. Of course, don't just get one for the shock value -- this thing oozes pure, sophisticated style. Listen to the silence, let it ring on. Microsoft is said to be releasing a limited edition, Joy Division Zune featuring an adaptation of Peter Saville's pulsating cover art from the band's Unknown Pleasures debut. The launch is meant to parallel the June 10th release of the Joy Division DVD and could, in one fell swoop, lift the Zune above its L-7 image. Then we could go on as though nothing was wrong and hide from these days we remained all alone.

P.S. That's our mockup of what we hope the Joy Division Zune will look like.

[Via Wired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hong Kong always gets the good stuff first. Witness the SunView PMP Projector... or more handily known as a PMPP. The little silver box is the first commercially available pico projector -- created in by Sunlink International in collaboration with iView Limited -- and is currently trickling out in small quantities (though there are plans to ramp up production). The device is an integrated PMP running Windows CE, is capable of producing a 640 x 480 projection, has an embedded 3.5-inch LCD display, and utilizes an SD slot for additional storage. There's no word on pricing -- or if this is going to make it onto our shores anytime soon -- though we're pretty sure a crafty importer can probably get one of these into your hands.

[Via About Projectors]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ah, D1, that most professional of video recording resolutions. Streaming Networks' new iRecord Pro bests its previous iRecord offering with some fancy 720 x 480 recording, in addition to new DVR functionality and the ability to convert video formats without a computer. Given the quantity of content we're consuming on the go these days, there's certainly room for a device that can easily nab and convert video from our TV setup for some viewing on the move, but time will tell if Streaming Networks has hit the sweet spot with this $260 device. It'll be available sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Particularly of late, RAmos has really been exceeding expectations, and it seems to have raised its own bar once again with the easy-on-the-eyes V8. Sporting a svelte, black enclosure and a 4.3-inch display, this portable media player handles MP4, AVI, DivX, RMVB, MP3, WMA and FLAC file formats, boasts a TV output and even includes a text viewer. You'll also notice that it automatically detects rotation and orients the on-screen imagery in response. Per usual, price remains a mystery here, but at least this one is apt to be worth more than whatever change is currently residing in your pocket.

[Via Engadget Spanish]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Yeah, we had our fun just toying with the W7 at iriver's CES booth earlier this year, but the lucky souls at Pocketables were able to secure one long enough to write up a full-blown review. Straight out of the packaging, critics found the design to be attractive enough, albeit a tad chunky; particularly with this device, we'd say opinions on sexiness will vary widely depending on what floats your boat. Nevertheless, reviewers found the touch panel easy enough to navigate, and thankfully, the perceived audio quality was dubbed "great." Those interested in the video capabilities will be delighted to know that all was well on that front too, as the slew of welcome extras (FM tuner, text viewer, e-dictionary, etc.) were all praised. Now, if only this critter would show up in America, we'd have yet another solid choice when it comes to pocket-friendly media players.

[Thanks, Jenn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

We weren't terribly impressed by the iriver E100's size or functionality, but at $110 for a 4GB player with this size of screen, it's certainly hard to complain. For $50 more you can get an 8GB player, and both sizes come in pink, black, blue and brown and white flavors. You can pick it up now at Amazon.com or J&R, and we're sure other online retailers will be quick to jump on board.

[Thanks, KC]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Huh? Blockbuster just made public its February 17th offer to purchase Circuit City for $6 to $8 per share. As of this morning, Circuit city has not provided the requested due diligence necessary to move the deal forward. As such, Blockbuster is pulling a Microsoft and making the proposal public in hopes of inciting shareholders. They've even gone so far as to publish an open letter from Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes to Phil Schoonover, CEO of Circuit City. Really, is this how all corporate affairs will be conducted in the future guys? What really boggles the mind though is Blockbuster's quest for even more brick-and-mortar as digital downloads begin to take off. Hit the read link for the full contents of the letter.

[Via I4U]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

By now you're probably aware of the Zune Guy's mission to change his name to Microsoft Zune, right? He's now documenting the entire process to the delight of amateur psychologists and identity thieves everywhere (seriously dude, at least edit out your phone number). You'll find step 1 of his vision quest -- a call into Microsoft to discuss the legality of the move -- recorded after the break.

Look, we know that our continued attention just rewards the monkey for his dance. But like any good car crash, our morbid curiosity won't let us look away. Especially when we learn that the Zune Guy drives a Ford Focus, just like Bill Gates. We're guessing that's not a coincidence. Click through for the action.

[Thanks, TomTom]
